Name: Hannah Holt
Hometown: Poplar Bluff, Mo.
College: University of Arkansas
Major: Apparel Studies
Year: Senior

Why did you choose this major?
When other children wanted to be astronauts and doctors, I wanted to be a fashion designer. I got my first mannequin for Christmas when I was 10 and my first sewing machine on my 11th birthday.

What are your fashion classes like?
All classes are very small and hands-on. You are introduced to every aspect of the fashion industry at a personal level, from pattern making and sewing to visual merchandising and marketing.

What do you love most about the apparel studies program at the University of Arkansas?
The professors supply endless opportunities to get involved in the industry through volunteer work or contacting potential employers.

How do you want to use your major after graduation?
My dream is to be a stylist while owning my own showroom or boutique. I also have a niche for hair, makeup and the overall presentation of personal style.

What experiences have you pursued to prepare you for your future career?
I am currently an assistant manager at Savoir Faire in Fayetteville, aiding in visual merchandising and styling. I am also working on my own line to be featured in Northwest Arkansas Fashion Week 2014 (stay tuned!). I have worked with the Drama Department and the University Theatre, specializing in costume design and theatrical makeup for recent shows. In May, I went on an eight-day trip to Los Angeles and San Francisco through the apparel studies program where I was able to tour 30+ showrooms, warehouses, markets and fashion districts.

What experiences should prospective fashion majors pursue?
I highly encourage internships or even just starting with a part-time job in retail. Get involved with organizations at school.

I never imagined myself as a “thespian” but my passion for styling landed me in the University Theatre.

Advice for high school students considering fashion:
No. 1: No goal is unattainable. Let the world (or in this case, the industry) be your oyster.

No. 2: Be(lieve in) yourself and never be afraid to stand out. Decide your niche and stick to it.

No. 3: Carpe Diem. Network. Travel. Take absolutely every opportunity you can and run with it.
