Tool and die makers are a type of machinist who set-up and operate a variety of computer-controlled and mechanically controlled machine tools to produce precision metal parts, instruments and tools.

Other Responsibilities

  • Tool and die makers construct precision tools or metal forms, called dies, that are used to cut, shape and form metal and other materials.
  • Tool and die makers use computer-aided design (CAD) and blueprints to develop products and parts.
  • Tool and die makers often make many parts and assemble and adjust machines used in the process.

Education needed: A certificate and on-the-job training. Some community colleges and technical schools offer two-year tool and die programs that teach design, blueprint reading, welding and cutting tool use, and the programming and function of CNC machines.
